Posted by laura on July 13, 2008 – 7:30 pm

Tonight’s release is all about your need for speed. Specifically, your need to instantly add fresh photos, videos, blog posts, groups, discussions and invitations to your network.

The Quick Add menu also offers a Share This Page feature, which lets members add their stuff to popular directories like Digg and StumbleUpon.

Tonight’s release is complete!

Posted by Evan on June 5, 2008 – 9:26 pm

Tonight’s release is complete, and your networks are now equipped with a ton of great new features and fixes to take advantage of. Best of all, we were able to avoid taking your networks offline!

Feel free to visit the discussion about this release, or check out the full details of all changes. Below are just a sample of the new features available:

  • Forum Improvements: In addition to cosmetic fixes, we’ve introduced the ability to display “Featured” discussions in the forum section, much like featuring members or groups. Network Creators will now have the ability to swap your forum between two styles:
    • “Flat” — replies are shown in chronological order, or
    • “Threaded” — replies are indented below the post or the reply that they respond to

There will also be an option to set the main Forum page default view to show categories only, latest discussions by time or latest discussions by category.

  • Enhanced Viral Widget Distribution: You and your members can easily spread your network’s badges, widgets, individual videos and photo album slideshows to MySpace, Facebook and 15 other popular destinations without the need to copy and paste HTML embed code.
  • Drag-and-Drop Profile Page Layout Editing: Let your members freely re-arrange their profile pages. We’ve also added Network Creator controls to allow/disallow members to change their profile page themes and/or layouts.
  • Friendships will now appear in Latest Activity: New friendships between members of your network will be announced in the Latest Activity feed. Like all other latest activity, you can disable these from appearing.

Network release is complete!

Tonight’s network release is complete! Here’s what you’ll now be seeing on your networks.

New Birthday Field on Signup
As you’ll notice that on the new sign up screen, we’ve added a birthday field. We’ve done this because it’s the quickest way to comply with our Terms of Service and Federal law. A member’s birthday will not display automatically but he or she will have the option to display their age.

Your PIN is now your “Master Key”
The PIN you use to sign in to your network is now your “master key” and you will be able to add letters and characters to make it more secure. The master key is only for Network Creators and Administrators.

More Flexibility with Profile Questions
We’ve removed the requirement to have at least one profile question on your network and updated the default profile questions to be a bit more generic.

If you have questions, please join us in this Network Creators’ discussion.

We’ve also launched a new streamlined version of the “Create Your Own Social Network” process. Check it out at Ning.com!

SeaKnots: for those who cruise the ocean

Posted by Alex on April 15, 2008 – 8:42 pm

SeaKnots is a beautiful network created for the boaters among us who love to sail the seven seas. With an aquamarine ocean background, you can’t help but want to throw on your Captain’s hat and raise the anchor.

When joining this network, members are asked to identify themselves as a Vessel, Sailor or Yacht Club/Marina. This way, your Bruce Roberts 42 can have it’s own profile! And with amazing images of both sailors and boats, there’s a lot of content to dive into.

Don’t feel you have the sea legs to shimmy up the mast to untangle the sail lines? Check out this great instructional video for using the Mast Mate climbing system! You’ll be fixing the rigging in no time. Also, the forum is filled with great info ranging from boat naming to the America’s Cup, which will be great for speaking the lingo at your next boat race!

So if you own a boat, have been on a boat or just you would look good in a sailor’s hat, set your course due West and sail on over to http://seaknots.ning.com/.
