While Ning has had beta support for simple OpenSocial Gadgets since the end of last year, we are launching full OpenSocial support at the end of September. OpenSocial will enable you and your members to add even more great features, or Applications, to your Profile Pages.
Here’s a Profile Page with two OpenSocial Applications: a “Rental Queue” and a “File Collaboration” application from Box.net:

You and your members will be able to easily access your network’s own OpenSocial directory and add Applications to your Profile Pages with a single click. Once installed, each Application appears as a Profile Page module. Each Application will also have a full-size Canvas page to offer room for even more functionality:

At launch, you’ll only be able to install OpenSocial Applications on Profile Pages. We will offer the option to add OpenSocial Applications to your network’s Main Page in a future version. In the interim, our new Tab Manager will serve as a quick and easy way to directly link your network’s top navigation to any OpenSocial Application Canvas page.
This OpenSocial release will allow Applications to access (if a member allows it) a member’s network friends, name, profile photo, activity stream and more. This means that you and your members will have a seamless experience with a whole new level of features from certified third party developers on your social network. For example, OpenSocial Applications may make live video streaming, e-commerce, file storage/sharing, self-expression/status updates, collaboration tools and more available to your members on your social network on the Ning Platform.
We’re currently in a private OpenSocial beta with a select set of third party developers, so there will be a handful of great Applications at launch. Even better, we’ll be opening our doors to a broader range of interested developers next week. We’ll have an update then.
So, to recap upcoming releases:
Fasten your seat belts and have a great Labor Day Weekend!
